VISION 2020 INDIA's News Bulletin - March 2008

Dear Members:
This update will inform about what has been some of the recent developments during the final quarter of FY2007-08.
Our Board President (Mr RD Thulasiraj) had informed about the organizational changes, including my coming onboard as the Executive Director w.e.f. 1st February, 2008.
Our 17th Board Meeting was held at Cochin on January 27th and 28th 2008.

(1) Our Strategy
Programmatically, our board had identified six strategic thrust areas (Advocacy, Policy and Program development, Quality in Eye Care, Resource Mobilization, Resource Centre and Organizational Development). This was articulated in the Long Term Strategic Planning (LTSP) Document prepared in July 2006.
Each of these six areas is the responsibility of Teams of Competency (TOC). These teams are headed by a Board Member.

(4.1) Updated list: available at http://www.vision2020india.org/membership.asp. We have included a map which indicates the location of our members. Our 65 member organizations are located in 39 districts of 13 states, hence, as a collective force we can create an impact in the six strategic areas, as articulated in our Long Term Strategic Plan (LTSP).

(4.2) Eligibility to vote and hold office:
  • Only Founder and Institutional members (active), i.e., have paid their subscription fees are eligible to vote or hold office in the society.
  • Associate, Honorary members & Industry members can take part in all activities except voting or holding office.
(4.3) New Members: The board approved the applications of three organizations: two as Institutional Members (Suraj Eye Institute, Nagpur, and Choithram Netralaya, Indore) and one as an Associate Member (Paramahansa Yogananda Netralaya, AP).

(4.4) Sharing by the Members: We look forward to hearing from you about the following aspects.
  • (4.4.1) MEMBERS ROLE: Please share with us practical, doable ways in which you as a member of VISION 2020 India can/will contribute towards achieving the goal and ten objectives of the society?
  • (4.4.2) OUR ROLE: VISION 2020 India is a membership organization and a registered society; please share with us specific ideas (with examples) of how we as a society could add value to the eye care programmes / work of our member organizations?
  • (4.4.3) PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS: Are you as a member of VISION 2020 India Society aware of the NPCB Program Implementation Plan for 2008-09? In what ways were you able to contribute in its formulation? Please assist us with specific examples of how we can work together more effectively and efficiently with or Government Counterparts at the District, State and Central levels?
(5) Annual General Body Meeting and Elections
Our next AGBM is scheduled for July 10th and 11th at Jodhpur. This will be the election year for our organization and we will soon be sharing the Election Guidelines with you. As per the MOA of our Organization, only active member institutions, i.e., institutions that have paid their annual subscriptions will be eligible to contest elections and vote.

(6) World Sight Day: 2008
The theme is “Eyes on the Future - vision impairment in later life”. This year we are planning to organize the events in Pune, and seek your ideas on how you all can contribute to this event.
Prof. Jill Keeffe from Australia is assisting the Communications Manager at Vision 2020 in the preparation of information for World Sight Day - 2008.
She has requested for case studies of programs that have been evaluated to showcase successful outcomes. The report will include about 10 case studies.
We request our member organizations to use this opportunity and send an outline to her at jillek@unimelb.edu.au so that they can then select studies to be written up for inclusion in the Report.

(7) Community Eye Health Journal – Indian Supplement
Dr BR Shamanna (Editor of the Indian Supplement) has informed us that he will give space and voice to those people who are actively involved in eye care but have not published extensively in journals etc and document field level experiences.
Hence, more articles from interested parties and grass root and development organizations at the forefront of service delivery are requested. Please do avail of this opportunity.

In conclusion, our team would like to share the following excerpt from an address by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1910, which is very much relevant and applicable to all of us today, particularly our service-based organizations and frontline workers, i.e.,
